International Panel for Spanish Translation of Bahá'í Literature

The International Panel for Spanish Translations of Bahá’í Literature is an agency created on 6 January 1993 by the Universal House of Justice, from which it depends for the appointment and renewal of its members, that is in charge of producing authoritative Spanish versions of the texts of authority of the Bahá’í Faith, i.e. works of Bahá'u'lláh, the Báb, of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, writings of Shoghi Effendi and messages of the Universal House of Justice.

The latest clarification of its functions dated 2 January 2014 mentions the following: While individual members of the Panel carry out some of the translation work themselves, the Panel’s primary responsibilities are:

  • To facilitate and oversee the translation of authoritative Bahá’í texts, standard introductory works, and commonly published materials (copyrighted to Bahá’í institutions).

  • Recruit the assistance of well-qualified Spanish translators.

  • Review the work.

  • Make the translations available to National Spiritual Assemblies and Publishing Trusts, on request.

The Panel is currently composed of six members: Mrs. Migdalia Diez (Puerto Rico), Mrs. Malihé Sanatian (United Kingdom), Mr. Daniel Rider (Spain), Dr. Houman Motlagh (Mexico), Mrs. Leili Egea (Colombia) and Dr. Nobel Perdu (Spain) who also serves as the Secretary, or contact person. The Panel also draws on the efforts of professionals, academics and volunteers from around the Spanish-speaking world who are involved in the process of translating the Sacred Writings into Spanish.

The first major task given by the House of Justice was the Spanish translation of the Kitáb-i-Aqdas (the Most Holy Book), which became a reference work for the following Spanish translations, and was completed in 1999.
